郑君在例言里很明白的说，“现在所译的是泰戈尔各集的诗，都是：（一）我所最喜欢读的；（二）是我的能力所比较的能够译得出的。”因此，郑君“主张诗集的介绍，只应当在可能的范围选择，而不能——也不必——完全整册的搬运过来。”我想：我们若是为翻译而翻译，那么郑君这种“选择”的方法是极稳当的；我们若是“为大多数的译者计”，那么“选择主义”是值得宣称的；但我们若为介绍而翻译，尤其是介绍全集而翻译，所谓“选择主义”是大大的要不得的。

在郑君的选择里，究竟有多少错误，我没有那许多时间去做义务校对。现在只略举几个。

（一） 第一首原文：“……And yellow leaves of autumn which have no songs,

flutter and fall there with a

sign.”郑译是：“秋天的黄叶，他们没有什么可唱，只叹息一声，飞落在那里。”“which have no

songs”是没有歌唱的意思，绝对不能译作“没有什么可唱”。譬如说，“某先生没有笑”，我们似乎不便改做“某先生没有什么可笑”。并且在这首里，秋叶没有歌唱正是和前节夏鸟窗前歌唱对比说的，所以郑译不但是把这几个字译错了，把原诗的诗意也毁灭了不少。

（二） 第四首原文：“It is the tears of the earth that keep her smiles in

bloom,”案“bloom”可做一朵“花”解，亦可做开花的状态解；“in”可做“在…里”解，但有时是指时间而言，有时指空间而言，又有时是指状态而言。郑君把“bloom”译作“在花里”，便欠妥了。原诗的意思是把笑容的丰满比做一朵花正在盛开的状态，郑译“把微笑保存在花里”便无意义了。况且“keep…in

bloom”是一个连贯的词法，keep绝不该单单的译做“保存”。

（三） 第八首原文：“Her wistful face haunts my dreams like the rain at

night.”郑译是：“她热切的脸搅扰着我的梦魂，如雨滴在夜里。”案，原诗的意思是说，她热切的脸，即如夜雨一般，搅扰着我的梦境。郑君无缘无故的把“夜雨”译做“雨滴在夜里”，这样一来，乃是把“她的脸”比做“雨”，“搅扰着”比做“滴”，“我的梦境”比做“夜间”了。这是与原诗的诗意大相左了。我的一个朋友告诉我说，郑君的“滴”字不是动词，“雨滴”乃是一个名词。我更不明白了，假若rain可以译做“雨滴”，请教raindrop该译做什么？

（四） 第十一首原文：“Some unseen fingers, like idle breeze, are playing

upon my heart the music of the

ripples.”郑译是：“有些看不见的人物，如懒懒的微飔似的，正在我的心上，奏起潺湲的乐声。”案“fingers”乃是手指的意思，如今郑君译做“人物”真是出人意外了！我倒不敢相信我自己的英文程度了，于是请出《韦伯斯特大字典》来教训我，但是韦先生并没有说“fingers”就是“人物”。其实这倒还不只是翻字典的问题，实在可以说是常识的问题。原诗的意思是把心比做一个乐器。我们只要有一些常识就该明白，在乐器——例如琴——上奏乐的应该是手指。如今郑君说有些“人物”在我的心上奏乐，我不晓得“我的心”该有多大的容量才能容受得了那些“人物”！写到这里，我忽的想起，郑君致错之由，大概是把fingers错认为figures了罢？哈哈！

确实不同。你可以把一片飘零的

想象成一只鸟。但你画的时候

必然先有轮廓，先有预设

先有我们可纪念的场景，就像

一支烟点燃，似有鸟鸣

似有枯枝，似有嶙峋白骨

可供我们有栖身之地

可供我们消解，彷徨，或者振翅一飞

但高度有时不是我们摸索的必然要件

只有心里的鸟像陨石坠入湖心

那时，或许似乎模糊了水天的界线

想象的鸟和画出的鸟可能重合

鸟哪里知道

小树的生长

鸟唱了一阵

继续它的归乡

这年秋天

却没有看到那只鸟的飞翔

那棵小树依然生长在山崖

第三年春天

还没有听到那只鸟的歌唱

那棵小树继续它的生长

那只鸟

或许早已成了人类的饕餮大餐

或许早已老去

展翅在它梦的天堂
